The neurologist gave us some great information today. First, he said that the neurological rehabilitation center we are considering, Helen Hayes Hospital in Haverstraw, NY is a great place. He said that Steve could be in rehab up to a year (a little sad there, but we will see what he can do…)
Steve can leave ICU and transfer to Helen Hayes as soon as his jaw is wired and he is a little more stable – if they take patients who need ventilator assistance (which Steve currently uses mostly at night).
He will ask an ophthalmologist to look at Steve’s eyes. Steve is not able to open his left eye and the left pupil is fixed. The can open his right eye half way and does seem to see out of it. The neurologist believes the problem is caused by shearing of the brain. This is stretching and tearing of the tiny nerve cells that form the brain. He says that it is possible that healing with happen over time. The neurologist does not believe the hemorrhage of the brain was bad enough to cause permanent damage. Unfortunately, Steve cannot have an MRI now because of his trach tube. The eye doctor can look at the CAT scans for help in diagnosing the problem.
The neurologist was very hopeful. He said that there is a chance that Steve will make a full recovery.
One day at a time, right? He’s so young.. a year is substantial, but if his time at Helen Hayes is beneficial, it will have been a year well spent. Much love, as always, my friend.. xo
Steven is going to amaze you……..full recovery, less than a year…
